Impact Interview: Yessenia Funes
What She’s Currently Working On:
These days, I'm busy writing and reporting for my environmental justice newsletter The Frontline. In a few weeks, we'll be releasing a deep dive into the vulnerability of LGBTQIA+ land defenders in Brazil.
1. What was the “aha” moment that sparked your interest in social impact?
I grew up in a predominantly Black and Latine community where gang violence was common. My parents grew up in El Salvador, and when they took me to visit, I was struck by the level of poverty I saw. I saw that no matter where in the world my people go, they're exposed to varying levels of injustice. And I knew I had to do something about it, so I decided to write.
2. How did you break into the social impact space?
I went into college with a clear goal: become a journalist. From there, I explored different beats within journalism, and environmental justice was a clear path for me. I took that on as a second major, and I did several internships while in college, as well as write for the school paper and magazine. I did the work, and it paid off. I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to pave a space for myself within impactful journalism spaces.
3. What most excites you about the social impact space right now?
For me, seeing the energy and organizing of young people is incredibly motivating. I grew up feeling ambivalent about the world. I knew things were wrong, but I saw no way to change it beyond writing and reporting. The next generation can't afford such feelings of defeat. They're tackling the climate crisis from all angles, and it's so inspiring.
